Fifty states, the District of Columbia and five territories: where each one sits on the map, its capital, its largest cities, and what the place is actually known for. Fifty-six cards in all, each with its own illustration.

What it contains

• A map of the whole country you can tap, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.
• A card for each place: capital, largest city, other major cities, and the landmarks, rivers and firsts that make it distinct.
• Quizzes that ask in both directions — state to capital and capital to state — because knowing one does not mean you know the other.
• Silhouette rounds, for recognising a state by its shape alone.
• Rounds by region: Northeast, South, Midwest, West.
• A record of what you keep getting wrong, and a round that drills only those.

Where the facts come from

Capitals, largest cities and cultural facts are checked individually rather than scraped. Population and area figures come from the 2020 United States Decennial Census, so the numbers stay stable instead of drifting with every revised estimate. State outlines are derived from public-domain cartographic boundary files published by the US Census Bureau.

If you find a mistake, tell us and we will correct it.

Privacy

Statelore collects nothing. There is no account to create, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no third-party code. It makes no network requests at all: once installed it works entirely offline and never contacts a server, ours or anyone else's. The record of which states you have answered correctly is stored by iOS on your device alone, and is removed when you delete the app.

The app requests no permissions — not your location, not your camera, not your photos, not your contacts. Full details are in our privacy policy.
